Cuernavaca, city, capital of Morelos estado (state), south-central Mexico. It is located in the Valley of Morelos, some 40 miles (65 km) south of Mexico City, at an elevation of about 5,000 feet (1,500 meters). Cuernavaca, which translates as “cow horn,” is a Spanish corruption of the Indigenous name Cuauhnáhuac (“Place near the Forest”).
Cuernavaca ( Spanish pronunciation: [kweɾnaˈβaka] ⓘ; Classical Nahuatl: Cuauhnāhuac [kʷawˈnaːwak], "near the woods" modern pronunciation ⓘ, Otomi: Ñu'iza) is the capital and largest city of the state of Morelos in Mexico. Along with Chalcaltzingo, it is likely one of the origins of the Mesoamerican civilization.
After Independence and with the Constitution of 1824, the territory now known as the State of Morelos became part of the State of Mexico. Between 1827 and 1829, Cuernavaca was a district of this state. From 1829 to 1833, it was called a prefecture.
As it has been since Aztec times, the state, especially Cuernavaca, has been a favorite retreat for those in Mexico City due to its warm year-round climate. That, plus pollution and the September 19, 1985 Mexico City earthquake, have spurred a major housing boom which continues to this day.
